About Chad
What is life like in Chad? The average salary for those fortunate to have a job is roughly $62 per month. Only 6% of the people have access to electricity. Most children only spend five years in school. One in five children don’t reach the age of five. Life expectancy for men is 51 years and women 54 years. The vast majority can’t afford to ever see a doctor.
Poverty and vulnerability are pervasive in Chad, with 42.3% of the population living below the national poverty line. Extreme poverty ($2.15/day per capita [PPP 2017]) also remains high in the country and has risen significantly, from 31.2% in 2018 to 34.9% in 2021 and 35.4% in 2023. High food prices, below-average market supplies, continued disruption of cross-border trade in the east – due to the conflict in Sudan – and the impact of climate shocks have contributed to worsening hunger and poverty in the country.
